Severe Weather and Your HVAC System

‘Tis the season for fun in the sun, but summer is also time for strong storms. Do you know how severe weather can affect your HVAC system and what you can do to protect it?

HEAT

Your air conditioner transfers and cools heat. So when temperatures go awry and heat is extreme, your air conditioning unit has to work much harder to rid your home of all that hot air. Placing your HVAC system on a regular maintenance program is a good way to keep everything in good working order and running optimally.

WIND

Believe it or not, heavy winds and hurricanes have actually been known to dislodge outdoor HVAC units, Make sure yours is secure. Strong storms can also bring down trees and branches, but even debris such as leaves and dirt can clog up the works and make matters worse if the situation is not addressed right away. To keep debris issues at a minimum, keep the area surrounding your outdoor unit free from plants and debris.

RAIN

The heavy rains which can accompany Florida storms and hurricanes can also wreak havoc with your HVAC system if they happen to reach a point where flooding submerges your outdoor unit. If flooding does cause dangerous water levels around your outdoor unit, don’t take matters into your own hands. Let a trained professional handle the situation for safety sake.
