We all want energy-efficient homes, low utility bills and, of course, a comfortable, healthy living environment. So, as we enter the dog days of summer, you may be wondering about the best setting for your air conditioning thermostat.
First and foremost, keep in mind that while it may seem like a good idea to open the windows at night when it cools off a little, that might actually be counterproductive for several reasons, including the fact that it doesn’t cool off all that much at night in Florida during the summer months. What that means to you aside from a bad case of the night sweats is that the moisture you let in can create mildew in your carpets and furniture. As far as energy efficiency and cost savings, your air conditioner will also most likely have to work harder to cool off your hot house than if it ran at a consistent temperature.
Plus, don’t forget that certain folks – such as older adults, those with some chronic medical conditions and people who have to take prescription medications that may wreak a bit of havoc on their internal body temperatures – are more susceptible to the heat.
There ARE some things you can do, aside from setting and keeping your thermostat at the highest temperature that is comfortable for you and your family:
- Keep your air conditioning unit healthy with regular professional maintenance.
- Regularly change your air conditioner filters.
- Ensure adequate air flow by making certain that nothing blocks your vents.
- Make sure that your home is properly insulated.
